NHL Fantasy – Daily Goalie Rankings – Tuesday, January 16th, 2024

by: Domagoj Erbežnik

We have only eight games on schedule on Tuesday as we are coming off a very busy Monday. He has some interesting goalie matchups headlined by a game between the Islanders and the Jets as Sorokin and Hellebuyck face each other in a top-draft goalie matchup. We will likely have high-scoring games in Ottawa (Avalanche at Senators) and in Edmonton (Maple Leafs at Oilers) and out of those four starts only Skinner is startable. Dostal and Mrazek are interesting waiver-wire options for today’s matchups.

1
Igor Shesterkin vs Seattle Kraken
Grade: A

Despite going 2-3-0 with a .857 save percentage in January this is a perfect game for the Shesterkin to put in a good performance against the team fro the West in Seattle Kraken. The Rangers haven’t performed great as they have a 2-4-1 record in January and this being their last home game before going on a 4-game road trip expect the Rangers to bring their A game and win this game easily.

2
Connor Hellebuyck vs New York Islanders
Grade: A

Over the last 14 starts, Hellebuyck has an 11-1-2 with a .940 save percentage and is a great goaltending option this season as the Jets look like one of the best teams in the league up to this point in the season. The Islanders are on back-to-back and a little tired as they suffered a hard loss to the Wild yesterday. This should be another win for Hellebuyck and the red-hot Jets team.

3
Jake Oettinger vs Los Angeles Kings
Grade: A-

Oettinger played in back-to-back games over the weekend (started 1st game) and performed well allowing 5 goals on 57 shots (.912 save percentage). Today he will face the struggling Kings team on their second night of back-to-back. The Kings bring a 2-4-4 record over the last 10 games into tonight’s matchup and Oettinger and the Stars should be favorites to win another game and come close to Jets and Avalance in a big fight for the first two spots in the Central division.

4
Stuart Skinner vs Toronto Maple Leafs
Grade: B

Skinner is one of the hottest goalies in the league as he has a .957 save percentage across 4 games he started in January. The Oilers are on a 10-game winning streak and are facing a struggling Maple Leafs who have lost three stright games over the last 5 days. Skinner is a very strong start today and should be started in all fantasy formats.

5
Lukas Dostal vs Washington Capitals
Grade: B

Dostal is one of the great young goalies in the league as he has a .920 save percentage over his last 10 starts. Most of his losses are because the Ducks rank only 29th in scoring in the league and that is their biggest problem this season. The Capitals rank 30th in the league in scoring as this should be a low-scoring game and Dostal has been much better the Kumper lately. He is a very good waiver wire in most leagues today and in deep league, he could be a very interesting option if Gibson gets traded.

6
Connor Ingram vs Calgary Flames
Grade: B-

Ingram has been solid all season as he holds a .919 save percentage along with a 15-8-0 record. He has played in 4 games in January and holds a 2-1-0 record with a .917 save percentage. His game isn’t experiencing many ups and downs and another solid game is expected against the Flames but the Flames are in slightly better form at this point. This will likely be a low-scoring game as both goalies and teams are in good defensive form so Ingram should be started in most fantasy formats today.

7
Darcy Kuemper vs Anaheim Ducks
Grade: C+

Kuemper allowed at least 3 goals in each of his last 6 starts and has hit a rough stretch. Due to that, he started only one game in the last 8 days. The Ducks are in bad form as they rank 29th in the league with only 2.56 goals per game and are on the second night of back-to-back as they played an overtime game in Florida yesterday. This will likely be a low-scoring game as both teams are offensively limited(29th and 30th in the league in scoring).

8
Cam Talbot vs Dallas Stars
Grade: C

Talbot has been great this season with a .918 save percentage, but on the other hand, he is yet to record a win in 2024 with a 0-3-2 record and a .893 save percentage. The Kings are 2-4-4 over the last 10 games and are facing one of the best teams in the West today. We would avoid starting Talbot tonight, but the Kings are still a great team that can win against any team.

9
Ilya Sorokin/Kenneth Appleby vs Winnipeg Jets
Grade: C-
10
Daniel Vladar vs Arizona Coyotes
Grade: C-

The Flames are on a three-game winning streak and have won 6 out of the last 10 games as they look much better lately. But Vladar hasn’t been great this season with only a .883 save percentage and a 6-5-2 record. He is coming off a hard loss to the Blackhawks as he allowed 4 goals on only 20 shots. The Coyotes play average hockey and with Ingram in goal, this could be a very tight game.

11
Petr Mrazek vs San Jose Sharks
Grade: C-

Mrazek has had a good season as he has a .904 save percentage as being a part of one of the worst teams in the NHL. This is a rare game where the Blackhawks have a slightly better offense and another good news is that the Sharks are on the second half of back-to-back games. Mrazek is an option in fantasy formats today and if you have an available waiver add Mrazek is a good option.

12
Ivan Prosvetov/Justus Annunen vs Ottawa Senators
Grade: D
13
Martin Jones vs Edmonton Oilers
Grade: D-

Jones and the Maple Leafs aren’t in good form as they lost three stright games while allowing at least 4 goals in each of those games. Tonight they will have the toughest test as they face the hottest team in the league in the Edmonton Oilers who won 11 stright games. This will be a difficult game for Jones so we would avoid starting him tonight.

14
Mads Sogaard vs Colorado Avalanche
Grade: D-

Sogaard will make his first start in the NHL this season but he will go against the second-best offense in the Colorado Avalanche. The Avalanche are on back-to-back but are certainly not the favorite to win this match. This will likely be a high-scoring game so we would avoid starting Mads Sogaard.

15
Mackenzie Blackwood vs Chicago Blackhawks
Grade: D-

This is likely the best matchup in the league for the Sharks as they face the Blackhawks who are also a bottom 5 team in the NHL. On the other side, the Sharks are on back-to-back as they played a game against the Sabers in Buffalo yesterday. Still, we wouldn’t recommend starting Blackwood as he will go against Mrazek who has been better this season and the Blackhawks are still a slightly better team playing at home.

16
Chris Driedger vs New York Rangers
Grade: E

Driedger will make his second start of the season against the Rangers on back-to-back nights for the Kraken who lost without scoring a goal in Pittsburgh yesterday. This is a very hard position for Driedger against one of the best teams in the league so we would avoid starting him in all fantasy formats.
