Top 5 goalies for 2023/2024 NHL Season

by: Domagoj Erbežnik
1
Ilya Sorokin - New York Islanders
Last season stats: 62 games played (60 started), 31-22-7 record, .924 save percentage, 2.34 goals against average, 6 shutouts

Sorokin is the best goalie in the league and is the best fantasy option for the 23/24 season. Islanders are a defensive team and will look to have a much better year than in the 22/23 season. Sorokin is a key piece of what they are trying to do and will be relied heavily again this season. He will start most games and will again be in the 60+ games played range. If you want to pick a goalie early in the draft going with him or Jake Oettinger is the right move.

2
Jake Oettinger - Dallas Stars
Last season stats: 62 games played (61 started), 37-11-11 record, .919 save percentage, 2.37 goals against average, 5 shutouts

He is the only goalie who can get in the conversation with Sorokin and end up being no. 1 goalie off the board in fantasy drafts. His save percentage has improved in each season in the NHL and in the 23/24 season he will look to have a save percentage over .920 for the first time in his career. Also, he should break 40+ wins this season as they have a favorable schedule and he should improve on his overtime record (11 overtime losses in 22/23 season). He doesn’t have any injury concerns which is very important if you pick a goalie early in the draft. He is certainly one of the favorites to take home his first Vezina Trophy this year.

3
Igor Shesterkin - New York Rangers
Last season stats: 58 games played (58 started), 37-13-8 record, .916 save percentage, 2.48 goals against average, 3 shutouts

Igor came back down to earth after a sensational 21/22 season when he had a .935 save percentage and was easily the best goalie in the world. He is still a great fantasy option but he isn’t in consideration for top 2. He should again collect 35+ wins (36 wins in the 21/22 season and 37 wins in the 22/23 season). His floor is at a similar level as both Sorokin’s and Oettinger’s but they have a higher ceiling and that is why he is ranked as a no. 3 goalie for the 22/23 season.

4
Alexandar Georgiev - Colorado Avalanche
Last season stats: 62 games played (62 started), 40-16-6 record, .919 save percentage, 2.53 goals against, 5 shutouts

Georgiev had an excellent 22/23 season as he was for the first time in his NHL career a no. 1 option for his club. He had a career high .919 save percentage and his job as a no. goalie is safe for one of the best teams in the league. Colorado is again one of the favorites to have the best record in the league and that is a big plus for him and fantasy teams with Georgiev on their roster. Last year he recorded 40 wins and he should be close to that number once again in the 23/24 season. There are some good goalie options later in the draft but if you can get him after the 40th pick(late 4th, early 5th round) and you like taking goalies early he might be a good solid option for your fantasy team.

5
Andrei Vasilevskiy - Tampa Bay Lightning
Last season stats: 60 games played (60 started), 34-22-4 record, .915 save percentage, 2.65 goals against average, 4 shutouts

Vasilevskiy finally had a good summer break after being eliminated from the playoffs in the 1st round and had time to deal with small injuries. He should be 100% ready for the 23/24 season and again content for the best goalie award. At the end of last season, he had bad games and was just above a .900 save percentage over the last 2 months of the season. He is still playing in the best division in hockey and will definitely have many tough games throughout the season. He is the riskiest pick on this list but his ceiling is possibly the highest as well. If you like to gamble on players he is certainly an option for you and if things go right for him he can win many fantasy leagues.

Good categories: Save percentage (since 15/16 every season over .915 save percentage)
Bad categories: No bad categories
