NHL Fantasy – Daily Goalie Rankings – Monday, October 30th, 2023

by: Domagoj Erbežnik

There are 9 games on the schedule on Monday as most teams are coming off free Sunday and most first-choice goalies will start in what will be a very busy fantasy day. We have 5 inter-conference matchups and those are mostly matchups to target if you are chasing certain categories like wins (Go for Oettinger, Hill, Jarry, and Jonas Johansson. There is a hard matchup in vs Winnipeg between the Jets and Rangers where we will see two top goalies faceoff but temper expetation in that one as that game could go either way. Allen, Grubauer, Hart, and Gibson go against top offenses so avoid starting them where you can.

1
Frederik Andersen vs Philadelphia Flyers
Grade: A

It might be surprising to many of you but no. 1 goalie for me is Frederik Andersen who hasn’t been impressive this season despite going 3-0-0 in 4 games played this season. In one game he played only 5 minutes as he suffered a knock early in the game against the Sharks which would be the easiest by far. He allowed a combined 8 goals in games against the Kraken, Kings, and Senators. All of those teams have playoff aspirations and are good opponents. On the other hand tonight he goes against the Flyers who started the season strongly but they don’t have a team that should contend to be in the playoffs. The Flyers score just above 3 goals per game but the Hurricanes should win this game and Andersen should gather solid fantasy points for your team.

2
Jake Oettinger vs Columbus Blue Jackets
Grade: A-

Oettinger has been one of the best goalies to start the season as he has a 3-0-1 record and has allowed only 6 goals in 4 games so far this season. He is currently at a .952 save percentage and will look to continue with the same form against the Blue Jackets on his home ice. The Blue Jackets played only 2 away games this season and have scored 8 goals while collecting 3 points, with one of those games being in Minnesota against the Wild. He is on par with Andersen and consider them 1A and 1B goalies for today’s slate of games.

3
Adin Hill vs Montreal Canadiens
Grade: A-

Just behind Andersen and Oettinger, we have Adin Hill who has started his season very well with a 4-0-1 record across his 5 starts. Vegas looks great this season as they have an 8-0-1 record and look unstoppable at this point as they face a very young team at home. The Canadians also look good so far and have taken 4 games to overtime and hold a 5-2-1 record while scoring just over 3 goals per game. Still, Hill is a very strong start against most opponents as long as the Golden Knights play stays at a similar level.

4
Linus Ullmark vs Florida Panthers
Grade: A-

Ullmark has continued with his Vezina form as he has a 3-0-1 record with a .937 save percentage, He has put himself in a top 5 goalie conversation as he doesn’t show any signs of slowing down so he remains a must-start in most fantasy leagues. Tonight we will see a highly anticipated rematch between the Bruins and Panthers in what could likely be a low-scoring game but I would rather have Ullmark and the Bruins as they look like another great Boston team despite not having any superstars on their team. The Panthers have scored a maximum of 3 goals in each of their last 4 games so I would expect the Bruins to keep that number even lower.

5
Ilya Sorokin vs Detroit Red Wings
Grade: B+

Sorokin has already started 5 games this season and has a 3-1-1 record with a .915 save percentage and 1 shutout. He is clearly one of the best goalies in the league and will bring a bunch of points through the season for his fantasy teams but tonight he will go against the Red Wings who look very good offensively to start the season as they have one of the best duos at the start of the season in Larkin and DeBrincat. The Islanders look really good defensively as they rank 8th in goals allowed per game with only 2.71 goals allowed per game. Soroking is still a good start despite a poor matchup tonight as the Red Wings rank 3rd in goals per game with 4.00 goals per game.

6
Tristan Jarry vs Anaheim Ducks
Grade: B

Jarry has had a very up-and-down season as he currently holds a 2-4-0 record with a .901 save percentage. The interesting thing is that both wins for him came when he recorded a shutout and those highs were very high for him and his fantasy owners. This is a game that the Penguins should win and Jarry should bring some good fantasy points for his owners.

7
Jonas Johansson vs Seattle Kraken
Grade: B-

Johansson looked surprisingly well this season as he has a 4-1-2 record with a great 925 save percentage. The Lightning look great at home with a 4-0-1 record and should win another game tonight against the Kraken who play the last game of their road trip. They are coming off two straight losses to the Hurricanes and Panthers and this will be another hard game for them. The Kraken have won only 2 out of 9 games this season so this is another great opportunity to start Johansson.

8
Sergei Bobrovsky vs Boston Bruins
Grade: B-

Bobrovsky will face a great Bruins team tonight in Iconic TD Garden which should be a great game. I would expect this game to be low-scoring but the Bruins should still get away with a victory. The Panthers still have several injuries in defense and that should be a big reason I would rather have goalies above even if this game stays low-scoring.

9
Igor Shesterkin vs Winnipeg Jets
Grade: C+

Shesterkin hasn’t been amazing to start the season as he currently holds a 4-2.0 record with only a .900 save percentage. Despite that, he has turned things a bit in the last two games as he won both games against the Canucks and Flames on the road allowing only 4 goals on 63 shots. the Rangers have also turned things around as they won the last 4 games and will look to make it 5 in a row against the Jets who are coming off an overtime loss against the Canadiens.

10
Connor Hellebuyck vs New York Rangers
Grade: C+

Hellebuyck has a similar story as Shesterkin as he has a save percentage of .899 on the season but has looked great over the last three games where he went 3-0-0 while allowing only 5 goals. This is a very hard game to predict with good offenses so just temper your expectations if you start Hellebuyck. In the end, there is a good possibility one of them finishes as a top 5 goalie at the end of the day but you can only guess which one.

11
Ville Husso vs New York Islanders
Grade: C

Husso and the Red Wings have been involved in a bunch of high-scoring affairs this season and Reimer has looked better than Husso this season but Husso remains a first-choice goalie for the Red Wings at this point. He brings a 3-2-1 record to New York along with only a .894 save percentage. He allowed 20 goals over those 6 games and will have to outperform Soroking tonight which is a very hard task for every goalie in the world. The Red Wings lost the last three games to the Kraken, Jets, and Bruins so beware of Husso and Detroit’s current form if you decide to start him.

12
Elvis Merzlikins vs Dallas Stars
Grade: C-

Merzlikins has lost only the season opener to the Flyers this season and has a 2-1-2 record this season while allowing only 2.93 goals per game. He had impressive wins against the Wild and Rangers and looks to be playing better against good opposition. He will face Oettinger and the Stars tonight in what will be the toughest matchup for him this season so I would avoid starting him today in most categories and if you start him just be aware that Oettinger has allowed only 6 games in 4 games this season so Merzlikins has to be almost perfect to bring good fantasy points to your team.

13
Jake Allen vs Vegas Golden Knights
Grade: D

Allen has been impressive this season with a 3-0-1 record and a .930 save percentage but starting against the Golden Knights on the road isn’t a good matchup for any goalie, especially one that is in the net for a team that shouldn’t contend for a playoff spot. If Sam Montembeault starts feel free to drop him below Hart in daily rankings.

14
Carter Hart vs Carolina Hurricanes
Grade: D

Hart is ranked very low today but the Flyers will go against one of the best teams in the East who is finally healthy with Aho and Svechnikov back in lineup. Hart played great in most games this season but I wouldn’t be expecting him to have a similar performance again tonight. There are better options in goalies like Johansson, Bobrovsky, and even Ville Husso.

15
Philipp Grubauer vs Tampa Bay Lightning
Grade: D-

Grubauer has a 0-4-0 record with a .896 save percentage this season and going against a red-hot Lightning team on their home ice can only be a recipe for disaster so avoid starting Grubauer in all fantasy formats.

16
John Gibson vs Pittsburgh Penguins
Grade: E

Gibson comes into this matchup with a 1-3-0 record and .905 save percentage and a win against the Bruins in the last game. The Penguins play very offensive hockey this season with a lot of shots on goal and the Ducks aren’t very good defensively so avoid starting Gibson in all fantasy formats today.

If you are interested in starting goalies in a matchup between the Blackhawks and Coyotes you should go with Connor Ingram as the Coyotes look much better at this point but this game is between very high scoring game and I would look to avoid both goalies.
